Lesson 10
Transits of the Inner Planets
Transits as Process
Transits are not isolated events over which you have no control, but are instead part of a psychological process within yourself, which they reflect. Too much attention is paid in astrology to events, and not enough to the processes that bring them about.
Actually, events are like signposts – more visible than the process, naturally, but when you’re traveling, you don’t jump from one town to the next – you cover the distance gradually.
So it is with events in your life – you get there gradually via an internal psychological process. Transit readings that focus only on events miss out on a potent tool for self-knowledge and change.
The inner planets seem to influence our lives on a daily basis to a greater extent than the outer planets, and therefore “rule” more of the mundane things that affect us directly.

The Transiting Planetary Environment
The fluctuating planetary environment is a living field. It stimulates your growth just as the Sun stimulates the process of phototropism (growing toward the light) in plants. As the transiting planets form aspects to various placements in your natal chart, your individual semesters of personal growth become clearly defined. While your life is primarily the product of the combined interactions of your genetics, your socio-economic conditions, your upbringing and your own process of decision-making, the planetary atmosphere is one more contributing factor in this complex aggregate of conditions.
Knowing your upcoming transits can help you plan and understand your life. For instance, if you know that you’re having a major Saturn transit next year, plan on being busy and achieving something. The key to freedom with Saturn lies in carefully choosing your responsibilities, willingly disciplining yourself to be on task, then following through in a mature fashion. There are great rewards for working with Saturn, for honoring and sticking with commitments made under Saturn. In the same way, there are rewards for cultivating healthy expressions of all the planetary energies.
Astrology and Free Will
One of astrology’s great failings lies in its perpetuation of the fatal myth of predetermination. The original and erroneous claims by ancient astrologers to predict the future have clung to the tradition for centuries, much to its own detriment. Prediction and pre-destination are among the basic and fundamental assumptions of traditional astrology, and are a major source of its rejection by rational and educated contemporary individuals. Historically, the great battles between astrology and theology were waged over the debate between free will and predeterminism.
Astrologers have historically relied on prediction as a major source of their bread and butter. If prediction were removed from the body of astrological theory, what would remain? The answer is – plenty! There is enough that is substantive in astrology’s ability to describe psychological states to support its position as a useful technology. It need not deny the individual right of self-determination to justify its own existence.
Astrology functions better as a diagnostic and prescriptive tool rather than as a predictive one. If used judiciously, astrology has within it the capacity to diagnose psychological and environmental conditions; and using the same technological information, it can formulate curative prescriptive solutions to problems.
Yet it remains that astrology is the science of time. Time has an ontological reality, that is, time has a variable texture and nature and a cosmic structure, all of which are constantly changing within the context of the endless overlapping cycles described by planetary rhythms. An awareness of the fluctuating characteristics of personal and collective psycho-social phases and cycles enhances and expands individual choice and the exercise of free will, in the same way that knowledge of the upcoming weather provides useful information for certain kinds of decision-making. And
let us not forget that astrology, like meteorology, is not an exact science.
One of the problems with astrology’s undeniable capacity to forecast general upcoming conditions in the psychosocial ambiance has been the false exaggeration of that capacity into specific prediction, along with the generation of catastrophic apprehension and dread.
Fear is typically stimulated by traditional astrology’s unsupportable belief that there are good and evil planets, aspects and influences. These false and limiting, if not actually inane, ideas have their origins in astrology’s primal enmeshment with religion, a problem that has yet to be identified, discussed and corrected. While astrology can
describe spiritual conditions, it is most definitely not religion, having no inherent dogma or ritual.
It is imperative to learn to use astrology without fear, and to take responsibility for one’s life and decisions, without the milleniallist, catastrophic undercurrents of gloom so unbearably common in traditional astrology. Concepts such as malefics, benefics, and good or bad aspects must be eradicated from astrology’s vocabulary.
It is time for mainstream astrology to recognize and acknowledge that all facets of the cosmic framework, whether aspects, signs or planets, are inherently positive in their essential natures, and are necessary to the wholistic functioning of the solar system, and its microcosmic counterpart, the human psyche. In other words, nothing in the astrological vocabulary is inherently good or bad, healthy or unhealthy. Only people can be evaluated as such, and then there is always the potential for change and transformation into states of health and loving equilibrium.
The Birth Chart as an Organic Whole
The entire birth chart is internally cohesive, and operates as an organic wholistic interrelationship of patterns. The chart itself is a representative of the body of the personal psyche, with the planets symbolizing individual psychic organs. For instance, Mercury is the psyche’s organ of communication and cognition; Neptune is the organ of sleep, dreams, imagination and the subconscious; the Moon is the organ of emotional nourishment, well-being and security, and so on. All these psychic organs are interconnected and need to operate efficiently in order for an individual to be an optimally healthy, fully functional being.
No single, abstract astrological principle, such as an aspect or planetary position, can indicate the presence or absence of the psychic health, or the success or failure (which are such completely relative terms to begin with) of any given person. In other words, the birth chart itself cannot tell us the degree of functionality of the person it represents.
Neither can the birth chart alone provide more than the most superficial information about the person it represents. The chart must always be understood in connection with the specific individual for whom it has been calculated, and always within the context of the nearly endless psychosocial variables in that person’s life.
The concept of the unaspected planet is impossible to reconcile with the wholistic view of the chart as an organic aggregate. A planet is always positioned within the matrix of the entire chart, either in its phasic relationship with other planets or within its patterns of midpoint structures.
The Need for Astrological Reform
The value judgments of traditional astrology, whether pointed at so-called malefic planets or the “evil rays” of certain aspects are not only wrong, they stem from ignorance, and do not hold up under scrutiny. If you examine the many hundreds and thousands of charts that must be studied in order to learn the art of astrological interpretation, you cannot fail to notice that the traditional assessment of malefics, benefics, good and bad aspects, and so on are absolutely 100% false!
Unfortunately, due to its suppression as a consequence of the scientific revolution, the astrological tradition has for the most part remained in a stunted, dream-like state of unawareness for several centuries. It has barely begun to actualize the reformation called for by its great historic practitioners, such as Kepler, Cardano and Dee. Because of
its essential truth, however, astrology has maintained its position in the public mind as an acknowledged and valid system of information. The 21st century is the likely period during which it will experience its long-awaited renewal and regeneration.
The primary requirement for astrology’s imperative and mandatory development is the acknowledgment of the individual’s responsibility for his or her state of consciousness and right to make choices. Each individual is freely accountable for the expression, and health of his or her birth chart and psychological condition.
Two people can have identical birth charts and lead entirely different lives, depending on the previously stated list of variables: their socio-economic backgrounds, their genetics, their upbringing, and the personal choices that they make about their own lives. In fact, there are as many responses to any one given astrological condition as there are human beings on earth! Rather than pigeonholing human personality into narrow categories of rigid character traits, astrology reveals the endless diversity of human potential.
To attempt astrological reform with the goal of determining superior techniques for making more accurate predictions is a hopeless and philosophically empty waste of time. Efforts at statistically quantifying astrologically centered behavior based on singular factors such as zodiacal signs or planetary aspects can only lead to discouragement and a re-enforced attitude on the part of the educated community that astrology “doesn’t work”.
Astrology is not a predictive science that responds well to statistical analysis, because human beings have freedom to exercise their will and make a wide variety of choices regarding their responses to events and states of consciousness. In addition, astrology utilizes a highly complex system of multiple interactive symbols, which do not respond to a simple form of reductionism. While the impressive work of the Gauquelins forged major roads toward deeper insights into the operating relationship between planets, angles and profession, it was limited by its employment of a planetary unifactoral hypothesis (in other words, one planet alone describes successful professional choice). It is an amazing reflection of their personal genius that they got as far as they did.
For astrology to emerge from its superstitious origins, it must also become disentangled from its earlier enmeshment with religion, which branded it with the semantics of good and evil. Astrology is neither religion nor is it a hard science in which people respond to astrological “influences” like Pavlovian dogs. Astrology is an art of individuality and personal freedom, not a science of predicting human behavior. It describes states of consciousness, both at the personal and collective levels.
Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to always examine the chart in close connection with the person it represents. Because we have the freedom to make choices, including the choice to live a healthy or self-destructive lifestyle, we need to apply the concept of wellness and health to the astrological art. One can be conscious of the health and state of natal Pluto as much as one can be aware of the condition of one’s heart or colon.
Transits are opportunities to check out the health and functionality of our psychic organs, which are the various facets of our personalities. As transiting planets click off aspects to our natal planets, external reality provides us with a virtual biofeedback mechanism that reflects back to us the projected condition of our own inner selves.
The Nature of Transits
The nature and intensity of an individual’s experience during any transit can vary depending on certain facts. The psychological and environmental conditions of the person are of primary importance. This includes the ripeness of karmic and subconscious conditions and attitudes, and their readiness to precipitate into the environment. Emotions, beliefs and habitual patterns of response can crystallize into life events when environmental and planetary conditions are right. Also take into account the person’s age, life lessons and purpose as described in the chart. The receptivity to learning at a given time must also be considered. These are conditions that may not necessarily be determined
astrologically.
An individual’s skills at dealing with planetary energies must also be taken into account. For example, a structured and responsible individual may travel through a Saturn transit with gusto, but if he or she has difficulty handling emotional intensity, there may be a significant reaction to what could be considered an otherwise minor transit from Pluto. The solution here is to learn to work with Plutonian issues like intimacy, trust, boundaries and letting go; for the astrologer, the lesson is that no transit is really minor, and we always need to carefully observe and learn from each chart with which we come into contact. You will find that the cosmos will not only provide the scenario for the planetary lesson to be learned, but will also supply the cast of characters who can be instrumental in the learning process. In this case, Plutonian people might be potential catalysts for growth.
A transiting planet will symbolically resonate with its own natal position. For instance, if natal Uranus is in Gemini in the 4th house, then Uranus transits to any natal placement may deal with freedom issues (Uranus) connected to communication (Gemini) in the family (4th house). Also, pay close attention to the house ruled by the transiting planet. If Uranus rules the 12th, freedom may be equated with inner retreat. Therefore, meaningful liberation opportunities may come in the form of privacy and seclusion.
The variety of transits that are occurring simultaneously will usually define the themes of growth periods. Typically, there are multiple transits occurring simultaneously. Look at the whole picture and search for themes. For instance, Neptune going over the Ascendant and Saturn going through the 12th are repeating similar themes of heightened sensitivity and desire for seclusion. Some transits seem to drown out other transits. The more dominant and noticeable ones are those that require and demand the greatest attention.
The Planets as States of Consciousness
and Transformational Resources
An awareness of your transits helps you define your semesters of personal growth. After all, life on earth is like being in school — we all come here to learn and grow and develop ourselves. Your birth chart is a map of your curriculum,
showing what facets of yourself you are here to cultivate and improve. No one can work on all features of the human experience in one lifetime. We tend to specialize in particular areas within a given life span.
The chart describes the potential talents that we bring in with us in order to achieve these developmental ends. We all have lesson areas, or remedial areas that need to be dealt with, sometimes symbolized by Saturn and the South Node. If these areas are given special attention, they can become our greatest strengths and most redeeming virtues. Just because something is a lesson area does not mean that you can’t excel at it.
One of the great values of astrology is that it can help us figure out what life areas and facets of our personalities would most benefit from attention at any given time period. Major transits of planets through houses describe long term projects of potential self-improvement, while specific aspects formed by transiting planets to natal planets indicate more potent and focused opportunities for learning and growth.
The transiting planets are the catalysts and agents of transformation for your inner states, which are the source of your externalized reality. Keep in mind that astrology describes states of consciousness. External events are projections of our own inner thought forms. These externalized manifestations of our states of consciousness are the product of internal subjective conditions meeting and intermingling with the environment, which, as Buddhist philosophy teaches, is itself a mass projection created by all sentient life forms.
The transiting planets generate changes in our psychic states, which, when they interface with external reality in combination with our own actions, precipitate as events. Events are then, really, mere bi-products of our internal psycho-spiritual conditions. To control and master the events in your life requires that you learn to master and control your own inner states.
When you approach your transits, don’t think, Rather, think about what frame of consciousness might be generated by planetary patterns, and what subsequent actions you can then take that will then exploit these psychic conditions to their fullest positive potential. When inner thought worlds and actions are in harmony with the externalized cosmos, happiness and spiritual fulfillment are the result.

MARS TRANSITS
Mars spends about two months in each natal house. Mars provides you with the energies needed to assert yourself in the pursuit of your needs and desires. Mars represents the instinctive urge to survive as an individual. It is the physical life force striving to remain an entity.
As the ruler of Aries, the sign of out-rushing energy, it signifies the aggressive urges, and the point where one feels instinctively opposed. As the ruler of war, in the individual chart, Mars indicates the “front line” in life or where one meets and overcomes opposition. Mars’ energy is most appropriate when facing danger because Mars’ energy is similar to that provided by adrenaline. It gives one the urge to flee or fight back when facing opposition. Mars’ Moons are named Phobos and Deimos, Greek for “fear” and “panic”. An individual becomes stimulated, energized, or aggravated under the rays of Mars.
Where Mars becomes active, there is confidence in beliefs and actions, and a desire to start something new. Mars rules those in the military, surgeons, those who work with sharp instruments and men in general. It co-rules the husband (or male significant other) in a woman’s chart and the sexual urges in all of us.
A most energizing planet, Mars easily sparks to life any significant point in the natal chart that it contacts during transits. It is said that Mars is the most “unbalanced” of planets – the one most in need of restriction or direction. Actually, though, Mars can show itself both in the most rebellious and in those who are respected leaders in courageous actions.
Mars Retrograde
Transiting Mars is retrograde for about three months per year (though some years it does not go retrograde). During that time you may experience reversals or delays in the affairs affected by Mars at that time. The wise general
never starts a new battle when Mars is retrograde – every 26 months, when it is opposite the Sun. This is a time of frustrated will and a deviation from the usual expressions of passion and anger.
Due to the dynamic nature of the planet, the length of time involved, and the concentration in a small portion of the zodiac, these retrograde cycles of Mars have as much impact as a slow moving outer planet.
If Mars is contacting a natal planet or another important point at the time it makes a retrograde station, there are likely to be two events that are directly related. One of these may fall near the time of the retrograde station and another finalizing event at the time when Mars again crosses the degree where it first went retrograde. Similarly, if Mars is conjunct a house cusp when it makes the first station, events linked to that house will be very prominent throughout the duration of the transits, often with a finalizing event near the last contact to the cusp.
The probable outcome of Mars’s retrograde cycle or any of its transits can be found by assessing several factors. These include the condition and strength of your natal Mars, made up of Mars’s sign and house position in your natal chart, along with the natal aspects formed to the other planets. Without aspects, Mars will be most influenced by the characteristics of the sign occupied at birth.
A strong Mars assists in affairs requiring courage, passion, and initiative, and if you have a strong Mars in your chart, you enjoy a healthy amount of competition and the opportunity to demonstrate your courage. You may be rather more competitive with standards you’ve set for yourself than competing with others and you do not wish to infringe on the rights of others as long as they give you the same amount of respect. Contrary to what might be expected, those people who are overly aggressive, combative, or competitive are not this way because of a strong Mars. Rather, this
would come from an afflicted Mars, causing its energies to work inharmoniously.
A healthy natal Mars would be so by a good sign and house placement and also by smooth-flowing aspects to other planets in the chart. This would ensure the easy integration of one’s efforts with the rest of the world. Such an individual is able to withstand nearly any onslaught from Mars, whether retrograde or not. In many cases challenging aspects to a strong Mars correspond with noteworthy achievements and progress. Mars combined with the natal Sun, Venus, or Jupiter by a sextile or trine aspect would bring harmony to the expression of Mars’s energies. With any of these aspects you are able to exert your initiative in a manner that is not threatening to others.
A weak Mars in the nativity could reveal itself by an over-compensating manner, causing inappropriate aggressive actions that bring problems back upon the individual. The “flight” option may also be in evidence with a weak Mars. Another likely manifestation with a weak or afflicted Mars is to experience the aggressive energies of Mars in projected form. In projected form, the individual is rather like a target for someone else’s aggressive qualities, and in occasional instances could even become the victim of such. A twelfth house Mars with several adverse aspects is an example of a weakened Mars and one that would need to be monitored closely as it transits the chart.
Most of us have several factors influencing our natal Mars, some beneficial and some that could be detrimental to our actions. Capitalizing on the positive factors and using discipline and direction on the less desirable ensures that we are using Mars to its greatest potential.
Mars transiting your 1st house:
A first house transit of Mars indicates a great effort on your part to impinge on the way others accept you at your face value. You will strive to make an impression, and these attempts are either assisted or challenged by the conditions in which you find yourself.
Your efforts may be directed toward an individual or a group. Actions you take to demonstrate your unique importance and worth will be the highlight of this transit. Look to the aspects made by Mars to determine the support or challenge you will encounter as you go about these efforts.
Your physical appearance may be the target of your efforts with this position and you may do an about face as you set out to improve or change your style. Having Mars go stationary direct near the Ascendant would be much preferred to having it go stationary retrograde on this point. In the latter case, one sometimes encounters delays or setbacks in whatever is being attempted.
However, further preparation may be in order, and with Mars’ re-entry of the twelfth house, this preparation may take place behind the scenes. Here, also, the clouds of Neptune tend to veil any concrete results for the time being, and occasionally implies hidden tactics or covert hostility, which could undermine your efforts. This is a good time to
remain aboveboard in all activities.
If encountering very adverse aspects, a first house position of Mars sometimes indicates an illness or minor accident.
Mars transiting your 2nd house:
With Mars transiting the second house, you will exert extra energy to secure whatever you feel you have earned in the way of resources. Financial conditions are the subject of this Mars transit and the area may see great improvement, with an increase in both resources and possessions.
If Mars is retrograding through the second house, actions taken to build up resources do not usually have an immediate result. Instead, there is a waiting game, at the end of which you find out the success of your efforts. Some routine expense may come to an end at this time; however, actions are required by you to make this happen. New expenses might replace old ones, due again to the initiative you demonstrate.
With very adverse aspects, there could be severe setbacks in your earning potential, affecting both your income and the resources you’ve been able to rely on in the past. The work you do may not be as profitable as previously, or there may be unexpected expenses. In either case, you may need to confront some issues and fight to secure your resources, since a battle is at hand.
Mars transiting your 3rd house:
The third house has two seemingly separate areas that it rules. First, it rules your general daily environment and this includes your neighbors, the youth of the area, those you meet at the marketplace, and your close relatives, especially your brothers and sisters. There might be an issue requiring confrontations and compromise with someone from this group. Starting a block watch or car pool in the neighborhood, or some project that benefits the youth of the area are examples of positive Mars’ action in this house.
The other area ruled by the third house has to do with transport and communication, and these are key to the more common issues that arise. Basic education, communications of all kinds, and agreements that are binding fall into this category.
If Mars is retrograde it is a good idea to be very clear about signing papers, buying a vehicle, or entering into any agreements. Extra caution is advised in driving or anything related to transportation with Mars in the third house. Because it works quickly and dynamically, accidents are the forte’ of this undisciplined Mars.
Mars transiting your 4th house:
Mars transiting the fourth house implies dynamic activity centering in the home. With this position it is likely that a very basic element in the home is undergoing some amount of turmoil or change. A positive manifestation of Mars in this house would be new beginnings through buying a home or real estate. The physical energies of Mars would be
fulfilled through moving and setting up housekeeping. Building a home or doing renovations in an existing home, which require physical labor, might also be indicated with such a placement.
Relationships within the family could be a source of personal turmoil with many adverse aspects. The fourth is one of the psychological houses, so events that happen here very much affect our sense of who we are and how stable we are. The aggressive characteristics of Mars do not blend well with family life in many situations. This position is akin
to having the proverbial “bull in the china shop”. Parents are ruled by the fourth house, and could be a source of disagreement or concern.
Mars transiting your 5th house:
With Mars transiting the fifth house, you become extremely outgoing in your self-expression and active in your pursuit of pleasures. These include the theater, hobbies, and other creative outlets of an artistic nature, as well as sports, parties, and social affairs. You will concentrate on activities that will keep you in the mainstream of life.
Relationships with others who are naturally creative themselves often become a catalyst to your own inspiration. Depending on your circumstances, a new romance or even a series of romances is quite possible with this position. This is an exciting position for Mars, but also an area where adverse aspects can cause one to become too wrapped up in the frivolities of life, ignoring more serious concerns. Promiscuity is an example of an unrestrained and afflicted Mars in the fifth house.
With good aspects, inspiration and progress can be made in creative pursuits. You might also be inspired to new projects that center on children and their activities.
Mars transiting your 6th house:
With Mars transiting the sixth house, you become aggressive on your job or in regard to your service responsibilities. Your services may be in demand and you could make some important strides forward. The alternative to this and the negative manifestation of Mars in the sixth house is in health problems and many times this is a direct result of
undesirable job pressures.
You might decide to change jobs, and if your work has not been fulfilling in the past, then initiative to make changes should be taken. Such a situation left unchanged could easily result in health problems, just as it could to routinely overwork oneself. Co-workers are sometimes a source of conflict if indicated by adverse aspects.
If Mars is retrograde, a situation on the job or with your co-workers may seem to be all consuming of your energies, and some review may be in order. Health maintenance and hygiene also falls in this area, and you may embark on a new exercise or health regimen. Although not often mentioned of the sixth house, it may signify activity relating to the
“services” such as the army, navy, or marines. Other types of services, where the monetary returns are negligible, may hold particular interest for you with this placement.
When Mars transits the seventh house, you are concerned with taking on a leading or aggressive role within a relationship. You are active in pursuing partners, and in the forming of new partnerships. The seventh house is where we first bond totally with another. Unlike the romances of the fifth house, the ones that begin under the influence of the seventh house are likely to be serious. Not necessarily forever, though, unless other factors agree.
With heavy afflictions to Venus and/or Neptune, a lost love could be the result of this transit. This is more likely if Mars is in adverse aspect to one of these planets at the time it makes a station during a retrograde cycle. An alternate manifestation of Mars in the seventh house is that you may brush up against another closely enough to stir hostility, rather than the forming of a harmonious relationship, and the two of you could become immediate enemies.
Sometimes the relationships you form are in some other capacity, such as counseling, or where several people come together to perform a project. Physical work or activity is likely to be required in such a project.
Mars transiting your 8th house:
In the eighth house, a relationship has already been formed, and now you put your efforts into working in cohesion with another and in the pooling of your separate resources. Cooperative efforts revolve around making the most of all the resources belonging to two or more people.
This position coincides many times with a time period following marriage, when a couple is learning to work together as a unit, both sexually and materially. With afflictions from Mars in this house, it could be a time of separation, calling it quits, divorce, or the break up of a business partnership. Taxes, loans, insurance, wills, and such may be a source of concern and activity.
The eighth house also represents our ability to overcome loss, and is usually active when a death occurs. However, even with adverse aspects, the death implied is most likely to be of a situation, rather than a person. Issues involving sexuality are usually very prominent with an eighth house Mars, and are sometimes closely tied in with a financial
issue.
Mars transiting your 9th house:
With Mars transiting the ninth house you become aggressively involved in expanding your basic beliefs and your philosophies about life. Sometimes this means showing active support by joining a religious or alternative group. Activity relating to educational interests is also likely. The people represented by the ninth house are those in a teaching or instructional capacity, and you may find someone that you are willing to follow.
A major decision might be required involving a long distance move or travel. A move, transfer, or relocation of considerable distance often coincides with this placement.
With Mars in adverse aspects, problems could come up with any of the people ruled by the ninth house. Finally, legal situations sometimes arise that must be dealt with. In an afflicted chart this might be in regard to freedom rights.
Ceremonies or rituals, especially those of a legal or religious nature, may hold special significance during Mars’ stay in this house.
Mars transiting your 10th house:
With Mars transiting the tenth, you are intent on pushing forward in your career and professional status. The desires and ambitions along these lines are unusually pressing. Being an angular house, events taking place now will have a great bearing on your future and will be long reaching in their effects.
You will express a great amount of initiative to further your personal career goals and to make important strides in your overall life direction. It is a time when great progress can be made and personal recognition achieved. You could be put in a position of authority and command over others.
Relationships with authorities are likely to be touchy in afflicted charts, and with many adverse aspects there could be reversals affecting one’s public image. This is more common if Mars is retrograde while forming stressful aspects in the tenth. Impatience in pursuing your goals or a lack of control could cause you to step on toes of those higher up or leave them feeling threatened.
Mars transiting your 11th house:
With Mars transiting the eleventh house, you will pour your energy into an involvement with groups and friends. The impulses are along very humanitarian lines here. You may take on a position of leadership within a group. This position is very conducive to accomplishments if you are already involved in a large group, and where the common goal of the group is important to the individual.
You may take actions to achieve your more personal long-term goals as well. The sign ruling the eleventh house should be considered. For example, if Taurus, a group may be joined that will result in the achievement of material goals; or if Leo, friendships may form with those who act as a catalyst to your own creativity and artistic nature. You may be able to use your connection with an important group to express your individuality.
If Mars is forming adverse aspects while retrograde, the friends you choose might prove to your detriment in the long run.
Mars transiting your 12th house:
Here the nature of the twelfth house is somewhat incompatible with the energy of Mars, and more effort is required to pull off the combination successfully. Mars’ energies must be afforded an outlet, and this is an area of concealment. This is normally where secrets are kept locked in tight, and activities with secretive undertones often transpire with
this position. The twelfth house is sometimes called the house of self-undoing. An involvement with drugs, alcohol, or in covert activities often results in such self-undoing.
Positively directed, Mars in this position can be an instrument for successful activity relating to a project that requires one to work alone or in deep concentration. Due to the physical requirements of Mars, unless the project is itself a physical one, frequent exercise breaks are needed.
With this position there is also a tendency to negate or ignore feelings of aggression, and not wishing to display them, they are repressed. In this case, problems can occur of a psychological nature from this bottling up of toxic energy and the results can be devastating when they finally do erupt.
Allow for an outlet of these energies, either through physical work or a needed confrontation, rather than letting them boil over inside and possibly bring on an illness. Institutions such as hospitals, prisons, or any rehab center for those who are unable to function in society for the time being are all under the jurisdiction of this house.
Mars Transiting Aspects
The aspects to the natal planets that are made by Mars during transits, and especially during its retrograde cycle, are quite revealing. If there are several contacts, then each will manifest and should be considered.
Exact aspects made at Mars’ stationary points are extremely important.
Generally, it is of a more positive note to have Mars turn stationary direct on a planet than stationary retrograde. If other aspects are good at the same time, however, this may indicate new opportunities relating to the planet in aspect.
Although some conflicts, delays, or reversals may be expected if Mars is retrograde, any link of Mars to a planet that it was friendly with in the nativity will likely turn out well.
Mars – Sun:
Mars in aspect to the Sun describes how well your initiative is working with the aims of your ego and life direction. A good aspect between Mars and the Sun should be considered very strong – able in most cases to provide a certain amount of protection against other challenging aspects Mars makes. Mars is warmed by the Sun and you radiate good intentions through your personal actions.
These two in conflict indicates just the opposite, and that you could be working against your own best interests. The Sun also rules the father and other important authority figures that are in a position to aid you in your life direction. They either reinforce your efforts in making your statement of individuality, or they act in a manner that challenges you, shown by the aspects. This contact occasionally warns of injuries or health problems either for you or for an important
authority figure.
Mars – Moon:
Depending upon the aspects, a woman of great dynamics will be a source of support in your efforts at this time, or she will act in a way that appears to block and frustrate your energies. Any aspect of Mars to the Moon signifies issues and events relating to the home, family or mother figure and is similar to a fourth house transit of Mars.
Fluctuations and changes are occurring within the domestic scene. Combined, they indicate the possibility of a new living situation, such as a move or an event that temporarily results in an intensification of activities within the home.
There might be some temporary disruption and with a hard aspect – quarrels or some upset within the domestic environment could be expected. Accidents or health problems are other possibilities if in adversely aspected.
Mars – Mercury:
These aspects to Mars are important since it shows how your mental faculties are working with your urges to initiate action. Thought patterns are very stimulated, and those whose work depends on mental energy and agility can take advantage. With any of these aspects you have the ability to negotiate, making decisions quickly and precisely.
Agreements may be involved in many of your endeavors, and the hard aspects suggest confrontations or some degree of verbal conflict with those who might threaten your actions.
If you are in a position in which debate is required, you will hold your own and possibly excel. If the aspect is afflicted, you could become hasty or careless in your judgment, or too impulsive in speech.
The contact between these two is indicative of movement. An opportunity to advance the career might necessitate a transfer and move. Mercury rules young people, relatives, and neighbors who are involved in your efforts to assert yourself.
Anything put in writing is of extreme importance. Extra caution in this area is advised with the hard aspects.
Mars – Venus:
The combinations of Mars with Venus often indicate that the passions have been aroused. Such passions could be along the lines of art and creativity, or along social lines. These contacts reflect upon your ability to get along harmoniously with others, especially the opposite sex.
There is potential for new beginnings in the area of romance as well as in other relationships, and the contact is very basic to sexual harmony. With any of the aspects, one could be “in love with love”, and a thorough study of all the influencing factors is recommended before making serious new commitments.
Venus is also representative of material comforts, and with any of these aspects; there could be an increased passion for spending.
With positive aspects, you are able to go about your business in a way that allows others to see that they too will benefit from your success – thus they are usually very happy to do what they can to support your efforts.
Mars – Mars:
When Mars’ reactivates it’s own place in the natal chart, especially by conjunction, all of the natal potential of the
planet is stimulated. A certain amount of energy will arise out of such a contact due to the awakening of the natural competitive urges.
Especially in this instance the natal Mars should be examined for potential. Restraint and caution should be applied in regard to affairs ruled by Mars in the natal chart, but with assisting aspects, great accomplishments can be yours.
With hard aspects to a natal Mars that is afflicted, matters could get out of hand, and you could turn out to be your own worst enemy, unless you can curb rebellious tendencies and maintain control. Open confrontations are common with this position, and with many adverse aspects such conflicts might become physical, resulting in an accident.
Since Mars reflects those of a masculine nature, conflicts with these types are the norm. This contact occasionally corresponds with an illness if other indicators concur.
Mars – Jupiter:
Mars takes the expansive qualities of Jupiter to the limit. Depending on how this aspect is blended with others, the position can bring you great luck and ease of expression. Generosity and kindness are more practiced and you take action to help others out of a sense of duty and nobility.
The benefits of Jupiter are many, including the material as well as those that are spiritual in nature. You may have many links to those in a position to promote you or to be of financial assistance.
Afflictions between the two can indicate the careless squandering of resources in attempts to prove your individuality. Afflicted aspects could also indicate other types of losses, such as physically losing money or being the victim of robbery.
Expenditures may be increased and with adverse aspects, purchases made could turn out to be a bad buy. Since Jupiter causes one to feel exuberant and inexhaustible for the time, a likely manifestation when in adverse aspect is to overextend or make promises you cannot deliver.
Mars – Saturn:
Aspects of Mars to Saturn indicate whether you are able to express your individualistic urges in accordance with what reality demands. There may be a need for some balancing between the two.
With any of the aspects, you may feel somewhat abused or mistreated, or have spells of irritable feelings towards others you feel have harmed you. Later, you’ll see that in most cases there was not just cause for such feelings – it’s just that the abrasive combinations of these planets reflect upon a predisposition for feeling victimized and threatened. Try to keep this in mind during the contact.
With adverse aspects while Mars is in a retrograde cycle, feelings of revenge can lead to more serious problems, which are likely to boomerang by the end of the period. Authority figures are likely to be the target of negative thoughts, and problems involving them are fairly common. Your efforts may meet with obstacles or delays all
around and frustration creeps in. In extreme cases, events involving jealousy or treachery could be encountered.
Mars – Uranus:
In this aspect, Mars quickens the impulses to action. This aspect can bring you into contact with very new and exciting possibilities and people. You may have opportunities to pioneer into new realms, especially in the areas of electronics, inventions, and all things Uranian.
Breakthroughs may come to you in a flash, and in the positive aspects, you should ready yourself to take advantage of the sudden opportunities that abound. In the negative aspects it is a reckless time, when taking chances is cautioned.
Situations evolve suddenly and the end results of premature actions can be of great conseque nce. Irritability and feelings of antagonism may get out of control, with the temper becoming vicious. The energies of these two in afflicted aspect is extremely hard to curb, therefore accidents can occur due to the recklessness inherent in such a combination.
Mars – Neptune:
The aspects of Mars with Neptune, in all but the very best of aspects, can signify confusion in action. You may take action without having all the facts at hand. Imagination is very much stimulated in any of the aspects, and where this leads depends on other factors.
In the positive aspects this combination provides inspiration, and artistic pursuits are a fruitful area. Daydreaming and indulging in fantasies is more prominent under these aspects, and with proper direction the visions can be brought into reality.
Sexual experiences often take on a more spiritual quality and fantasies along these lines are likely. You might express these energies positively through involvement with charities and helping the weak, weary, or helpless.
Peculiar conditions are sometimes attracted as a result of self-gratification in drugs, alcohol, or some other withdrawal from reality. With adverse aspects, bad judgment in choosing one’s intimates could result in problems.
The adverse aspects occasionally reflect a time of physical discomfort, such as recovery after an operation or discomfort leading up to an operation. Travel may be indicated.
Mars – Pluto:
This combination can be the best of the best or the worst of the worst. With Mars in aspect to Pluto there is either a line of added support and power or an immovable force barricading the way, and this depends much on the aspect they form.
Becoming totally absorbed or even obsessive about your goals is common with any of these aspects, but there is a greater chance that this will be carried to an unhealthy degree with an adverse aspect. Pluto is a lot like Mars in nature, and all these primal instincts to push forward could cause one to disregard and run others over while in
the pursuit of goals. Sometimes, they or the universe will push back! In extreme cases, erroneous motives can result in plans for destructive actions.
With the positive aspects, you show unlimited energy and a powerful will in your efforts to make a personal statement. Progress and success can be made in a short amount of time, especially along the lines of increasing resources. This is also a very sexual contact and these encounters are intensified.
TRANSITS OF MERCURY AND VENUS
These planets pass through the houses with comparative regularity. Mercury and Venus add vitality and stimulus to the affairs of the house through which they pass.
Mercury on the cusp of the Ascendant or Midheaven implies a fortunate time for all things governed by the planet. The amount of good fortune indicated will depend on any aspects which transiting Mercury forms.
The same concept holds true for Venus when near or on the cusp of the Ascendant or Midheaven.
VENUS TRANSITS
Venus spends about three weeks in each natal house. Venus is the planet of love and material pleasures, so that its transits bring different degrees of enjoyment. The effects are felt as subjective experiences rather than as urges to action.
Since Venus rules money and financial rewards, we’re often on the receiving end of such during her transits. These transits are friendly periods of time when interests turn to socializing and enjoying good food and surroundings.
Venus is a very personal planet that we know subjectively through our feelings as love, tenderness, happiness, peace, beauty, etc. As an objective influence, ruling the things that pertain to her nature, such as flowers and gardens, she is art, music, social affairs, and pleasant activities, etc. In other words, the `idea‘ of Beauty is subjective, while beautiful
things, or activities are objective. What stirs an esthetic response may likely be denoted from the transiting planet.
Where Venus becomes active, there is a focus on what makes us happy and emotionally fulfilled. Venus rules women in general. It co-rules the wife (or female significant other) in a woman’s chart and the romantic urges in all of us.
Venus Retrograde
Venus retrograde affects appearance and our social life. It is not a good idea to have important new social events, or begin an intimate relationship during the six weeks Venus moves in reverse every 18 months — the rarest of the retrogrades, appearing to move in reverse only 7 percent of the time. Values are different then and whatever pleases you during a retrograde will change when the planet moves direct.
You’ll review things and people much more objectively and less impulsively during the retrograde. A good time to review previous relationships and appearances that failed before; conditions may have changed to make the previous partner or appearance appealing now.
Remember, old styles return, and relationships can be restored. Folks born with a Venus retrograde are likely to turn their social and romantic sides inward in the early life, becoming more expressive and sexual later in life.
Venus Transiting the Houses
The aspects made by Venus to the natal planets during its transiting cycle and the natal house it energizes must also be considered. The affairs of the house ruled by natal Venus will also come into play, and are often tied to our efforts to create beauty, explore romance and/or earn money. Although the aspects made by transiting Venus to the natal planets will show whether individual efforts are supported or challenged, and by whom, the house position of Venus is important in determining the possible area of ramifications from its transit or retrograde motion.
In the latter case, Venus will sometimes move back and forth through two houses. In such instances, it will have an effect in both areas, with the main emphasis associated with the house in which the most aspects are made or, without aspects, where it spends the most time.
Venus transiting your 1st house:
You should feel very good about yourself during this time, and very affectionate toward others and the world in general. You will likely feel comfortable with yourself and your view of the world, and exude peace and calm.
You will even seem to have a special “glow” about you, and others will be very attracted to your energy and want to be around you more than usual. You may even indulge in a bit of flirting.
Venus transiting your 2nd house:
There are pleasant energies surrounding money – perhaps help from someone who cares, or perhaps extra cooperation from those whom you are trying to impress. This transit will soften any otherwise difficult transits from another planet.
In any case, there should be little or nothing to worry about at this time – your good spirits will seem to magnetize to you what you need.
Venus transiting your 3rd house:
Do what you love! Write, read, study something that really feeds your spirit, and communicate about it with close friends and family. This is a great time for a “meeting of the minds” – and sharing common interests, making learning all the more fun.
This is a good time for social visits as well. You might even feel compelled to travel for short distances, to “get away” and be with friends you don’t see very often – a great time for reconnection.
Venus transiting your 4th house:
Time to focus on making the home a comfortable sanctuary from the stresses of the world. You might feel like entertaining others in your home. In fact, your home might actually become an oasis for your friends as well – a place they can be nurtured by you.
Also, this transit will soften any otherwise difficult transits from another planet. People will be more inclined to give you the benefit of the doubt than they would ordinarily be inclined to do.
Venus transiting your 5th house:
Really pour yourself into your creative projects – especially those that feed you emotionally. You can really get things flowing at this time – especially if your normal tendency is to “push” the river. You should be feeling your creativity at a very deep level inside you – make use of it.
You should feel extra compassion toward others at this time – use this feeling to mend any broken fences in your relationships – either with lovers or with children (or both).
Venus transiting your 6th house:
Love and take care of yourself and your health – schedule relaxation and focus on self-healing during this time. Let go of worries and stresses and try to find that calm center within.
At work, you should have a bit of calm, and most likely will get along better than usual with coworkers. You may also have a bit more charisma with your supervisors.
Venus transiting your 7th house:
Time to focus on your partner and/or marriage, as well as any other important one-on-one relationships that you have. Find time to appreciate them and show them how much you care. Communicate in a loving way, and schedule some “fun” in your life – this is a great time to “rebond.” Give your partner some quality time, and really listen to them and nurture them.
If you are single (whether looking or not), this might apply to your best friend or any significant other.
Venus transiting your 8th house:
Give yourself credit for all the change and growth you’ve been going though, and stay open to flashes of insight and guidance – in fact, it’s a good time to properly thank all your guides and teachers for their help.
This is also a good time for sexual activities that you enjoy. You might feel tempted to pick up that book on Tantra that you bought a long time ago.
You may also be lucky with or on the receiving end of loans or other people’s money. You could get a sympathetic ear for that funding you were waiting for.
Venus transiting your 9th house:
Consider teaching one or more of your special areas of interest – especially spiritual ones. Or you may be interested in taking another college class.
You might also be drawn at this time to take a long journey, or learn about a culture that fascinates you, or spend time socially with people from other countries. This would give you an excellent opportunity to learn another language, or visit some ancient sites.
Venus transiting your 10th house:
This transit lets you “shine” in the public eye. Your career and status in the outer world has a definite potential to improve now. Be gracious to those who can help further your reach in these areas.
You also have the power to really affect others positively and be an inspiration and example to them at this time. They are likely to hold you in very high regard now.
Venus transiting your 11th house:
You might be drawn to a new group, or new friends at this time, or maybe just “bond” more with the ones you are already involved with. Your positive feedback and compassion can really help and support people at this time.
You should also get a whole lot more personal enjoyment from your friends and groups, and perhaps even feel like deepening social connections.
Venus transiting your 12th house:
Keep track of your dreams (both night and day) at this time – there could be important emotional guidance from them. This is an excellent time for working with your spirit guides, as you will feel very cooperative with them.
But above all, listen to that inner voice – your intuition should be very strong during this time.
Regarding aspects to natal planets…
Venus will have a “softening” affect on the natal planets it aspects. You will approach them from a more affectionate or friendly place, and this energy will colour all your dealings in the short time it aspects your natal planets.
I will not go into them specifically, but see if you can imagine how they would be affected…
MERCURY TRANSITS
Mercury spends about a week in each natal house. During that time it affects your mental outlook, communications with others, and urges to take trips.
Mercury transits are generally very busy periods in whatever area of life Mercury is transiting. Again, Mercury rules communication, so this transit is concerned with communication of all kinds including conversations, letters, email, and even short trips. It’s not unusual, since Mercury rules dualities, that we find events and situations coming at
us in two’s, as well.
The inner planet Mercury is very closely related to the mundane affairs of our everyday life. All forms and methods of communication such as correspondence, telephones, computer networking, etc. come under Mercury’s realm. All modes of transportation and methods of travel are Mercurial. Clerks, typists, bookkeepers, newspapers, and methods of information-transfer come under Mercury.
In its subjective sense Mercury has an influence over our thoughts, the mind, and all mental processes. The conveyance of ideas between people in the exchange of concepts, and information through speech and writing come under Mercury’s domain.
Mercury Retrograde

Mercury retrograde happens three times a year for about three weeks each. When retrograde, messages are more likely misunderstood, so it’s best to avoid new contracts or journeys to unfamiliar places. Mail is usually delayed or misdirected, and you might even see clients and friendships cut off because of a misunderstanding. Revise that forgotten manuscript; return unused merchandise, and be especially careful choosing clothing and shoe sizes. Verify that orders and letters arrive and are understood correctly.
During Mercury Retrograde periods, there is an inverse relationship between hurrying and true accomplishment. People will be changing their minds. False starts are possible. Allow for contingency plans. For now, put aside your pen and start using a pencil with a big eraser. Pay attention. Stop, Look & Listen. Folks in sales successfully use this time to return to previous contacts and give the deal another try.
And, since the planet Mercury has an affinity for the winds, we can expect stormy weather and wind patterns to change on or around the beginning and ending of Mercury Retrograde periods.
Mercury Transiting the Houses
The aspects made by Mercury to the natal planets during its transiting cycle and the natal house it energizes must also be considered. The affairs of the house ruled by natal Mercury will also come into play, and are often tied to our efforts to communicate, think clearly, study, learn and travel. Although the aspects made by transiting Mercury to the natal planets will show whether individual efforts are supported or challenged, and by whom, the house position of Mercury is important in determining the possible area of ramifications from its transit or retrograde motion.
In the latter case, Mercury will sometimes move back and forth through two houses. In such instances, it will have an effect in both areas, with the main emphasis associated with the house in which the most aspects are made or, without aspects, where it spends the most time.
Mercury transiting your 1st house:
Here’s where you “talk your walk, and walk your talk”. You say what you mean, and mean what you say. Your integrity should shine here, and your ability to find the right words should be heightened.
Mercury transiting your 2nd house:
This is a good time to analyze your values, and ask for what you need, both financially and otherwise. Really look into yourself and see that you don’t have any conflicting beliefs about money and what things are valuable to you, so that you can manifest these things easily.
Mercury transiting your 3rd house:
You will have tremendous mental energy here – find somewhere to express it, as it will need to have an outlet – but try not to spread yourself too thin. It’s better to find a few areas to specialize in, and you will feel much more fulfilled if you do so. Read, study, talk, teach, write – find what will feed you the most and do it.
Mercury transiting your 4th house:
This is a good time to improve the communication in the home. If there are any blocks or problems, bring them into the open and talk them out in a fair, gentle way. If communication is good, then it should be even better now.
Mercury transiting your 5th house:
This is the time to start (or continue) any projects having to do with communication, whether writing, speaking, etc. Your ideas should be more receptive to others at this time, so make the most of it. This is also a good time to open (or reopen) communication with children in your family, or young people in your life.
Mercury transiting your 6th house:
Read up on the latest health studies, and see what you can do to improve yours. Also, keep the lines of communication open with coworkers and clients, as your words can have more of an impact now.
Mercury transiting your 7th house:
This is an excellent time to improve communication with your partner and/or significant others. Your words and ideas will be received more openly now, and your understanding of their situations and feelings can vastly improve at this time. This is a great time for bonding –perhaps even taking a short trip together, to get away from it all for a while.
Mercury transiting your 8th house:
This is a good time for communicating about sex and transformation. You should be especially intuitive at this time, and be able to receive specific insights into your process of growth and evolvement. It is also a good time to ask for loans or deal with other people’s money. In fact, try to enter contests at this time.
Mercury transiting your 9th house:
This is an excellent time for you to be a teacher, and if you are already one, you can really expand this area of your life. Your words and ideas have even more power now, so use them wisely and compassionately. It is also an excellent time for travel and learning a foreign language.
Mercury transiting your 10th house:
Speak up for yourself now – banish any shyness, and let people see your many talents. Show your expertise in
your chosen fields, and help others along in theirs, as best you can. You should have a lot more confidence in yourself than usual at this time – use it to further your goals.
Mercury transiting your 11th house:
This is a great time to either join or start your own group(s). People will be very receptive to your ideas, and you can really help a lot of people to come out of their shell and reach for their potential. You will enjoy being around people more than usual at this time. Spend some time dreaming and envisioning your future and where you want to be.
Mercury transiting your 12th house:
It’s possible that you could practice “lucid dreaming” at this time – there is a whole lot of potential for working with
subconscious communication. Perhaps you will come to understand some things that have been previously hidden from your awareness, and to be able to express these things to others.
Regarding aspects to natal planets…
Mercury will add a mental energy and ability to analyze and be creative in the aspects it makes to the natal planets.
Your mind will be buzzing, and ideas will proliferate. You might also tend to rationalize more than usual, and be more into thinking than feeling.
I will not go into them specifically, but see if you can imagine how they would be affected…
MOON TRANSITS
When the moon is transiting, we act and react from an emotional point of view. We’re operating on intuition and instinct during these times, and are better able to unconsciously sense what’s going on around us.
The Moon spends only about two and a half days in a natal house. This means that its effects occur so quickly that you feel them more as unconscious urges and impulses than conscious reactions to situations.
The effects of the transiting Moon, as it makes aspects with your natal planet positions, are often felt for only a matter of hours.
Spend some time contemplating the Moon’s effect through each house.
SUN TRANSITS
The Sun is the source of all energies. These energies stimulate the activities of the houses occupied by the transiting Sun and reinforce or weaken the planetary effects, depending on the Sun’s aspect to the natal planet.
Sun transits are times when we are often in the public spotlight and are times when we are recognized for our accomplishments. They’re also the times when we expect the pat-on-the-back or some other type of special attention. Sun transits include our birthdays.
Spend some time contemplating the Sun’s effect through each house.
PLANETARY HOURS
AND MAGICK
be that much more empowered.And remember: I N T E N T I O N I S E V E R Y T H I N G, i.e., do magick
when YOU are ready, full of energy and intent, fully focused, fully centered and clear. The solar and lunar phases, planetary days and hours assist our magick, but nothing is more powerful than our intention and will.
